New Mini Hair Pins

Worked on some new Hair Pins last night. I just LOVE them !!! I ordered these cute little felt mini posies from etsy, by A Market Collection, she has some wonderful items for sale in her shop. So I made these hair pins out of her mini posies...... Getting geared up for Merlefest !!!!

I also wanted to start posting pictures of some of the different items from the great gals in the store, girls on tenth, there is so much great stuff I didn't know where to start....So here is some of Tammy Brinkleys art work, her line is Periwinkle Pass.
Just love her stuff, everyone needs a piece of her work !!!

She has some wonderful Mixed media art on canvas, art on small wood boards, and frames. We also have some prints and cards, and if that isn't enough, she has jewelry too... here are a few pics

I'm Back.......

OMG !!! It has been almost 2 years since I blogged, where does the time go ???? Well there has been a lot of life and many changes, and I won't bore everyone with the details, but I am still here in Wilkesboro, North Carolina with lots of new , new, new in my life and those around me that I love.
I have decided to try blogging again , not that I think I will have that many followers, but I am trying to build my business and I have heard it a thousand times in computer land that you MUST BLOG !! So here we go........

First, we have a new store...YES , yippee !!! It is "girls on tenth" and it is a co-op store with 5 wonderful ladies. We have everything!!! Clothes from Holly Giersch with "Even a Sparrow", art "Periwinkle Pass" by Tammy Brinkley, handbags,Joyce Cirillo with "Girls to Girls", Tammy McHenry has "Refunked Junk" jewelry and yes me, Michelle Gann with "the vintage home". So we have everything from clothes, handbags, jewelry, art and lots of home decor and furniture. Sounds like a lot of fun. Come by and see us at 318 10th Street , North Wilkesboro.

Next I have been working on my online store thevintagehome.etsy.com and that has been a whole new world , with lots to learn and lots of fun etsians. Tried it a few years ago, but didn't really give it my all was running the old store at that time and I think like anything you do and want to make it good, you have to give it time and dedication. I am giving it my all !!!

I have set a personal goal to get my home based business off the ground, and I am giving myself six months to make it happen. If not it is back to the work force, which I know would kill me !!!

I will start by saying I don't really know how to blog successfully, and my pictures are the worst , BUT, I am going to try , try, try, my best !!! I have several blogs that I follow and just love to read them and get inspired, and see all the talented things that people are doing out there. I also have so many talented people around me in my life right now, that I want to share that as well.

Here are a few pictures of the store, will post more as we go along and I get better at this. Till then.....

Changes

Well its been awhile since I have blogged, so many changes...trying to keep store open , then closing store and getting my home based business started. And it is summer so I am trying to spend time with my kids as much as possible. (Including trip to California, which I will post later). So it seems life on life's terms can be a little challenging at times, and so is starting a new business from home. From changing e-mails to accounts and all contacts to being discipline with my time and work. I have moved my sewing studio home to my loft , and I seem to find lots of other things to keep me busy except what I should really be doing. But .....I am trying to get things off the ground and would like to find some new contacts of stores that are interested in "handmade one of a kind" items and more....This is where a big challenge is....the starting point of getting out there and selling not only my items but me too. (Any suggestions is much appreciated). I am off to a good start, opened a booth at The Farmers Hardware in Boone and that seems to be doing pretty good. Here are some pictures of my booth there.

Just a few pics......I have tried to make as many items as possible with the exception of the staple items that are always good sellers for me, soap, cards, and waffle towels.

I will be setting up at the Antique Show in Charlotte at the end of the month, so if anyone is going please stop by and say Hi !!! I will lots of my handmade pillows, linen towels with images and my new bird towels , and of course magnets too... I will post again soon. Big Changes

It is an exciting and SAD time here at the vintage home. We have decided to close the store, which has been one of the hardest decisions I have had to make. Sleepless nights of "do we" or "don't we" alot of back and forth, but ultimately I decided it was time to "LET GO" and move in a new direction. So even though our little gift store won't be here anymore we are all moving on. I knew when I woke one morning and had a huge sense of relief that it was the right decision. Times have gotten hard and in a tough economy I have tried to re-invent the store several times and have found it still difficult to hold on. And I can actually feel good about the fact that I feel like I have done all I can to try to stay open...and that is comforting.
So on to hopefully bigger and better things....I will actually be moving some things into the Wilkes Antique Mall ( down the street) and will still have products available at In every room in Elkin. I will also be available to still take custom orders for home and invitation pillows. And I am excited about my new venture of designing and wholesaling a line of pillows and towels to stores in and outside this area like mine who want a good product at a decent and affordable price, still keeping with in the "one of a kind" and unique items that we have always had.
We are also still available for purchases online @ thevintagehomeonline.com , where we will be posting all our new products and of course still updating you on all the exciting things going on right here on the blog.
So our last days are upon us and we are going to throw one last party on Wed May 20th, from 4 to 8 so please stop by so I can personally Thank each and everyone of you who have continued to support the store and encourage me. And our last day open will be May 29th.......
I will keep everyone posted on all the new and exciting things that will carry on with "the vintage home" we might not have our own store front but we will continue on.........

Mother's Day Workshop

Spring Into the vintage home

This is my favorite time of year to drive down the side street and see all the flowers popping up everywhere and trees bursting with sprays of green. Just like the lovely changes going on outside, we have some changes going on in here!

NEWS FLASH: There is a new place to purchase yarn in Wilkesboro!

We are proud to announce that Circle of Friends from Elkin has nestled into our store with the most wonderful selection yarns, books, and other supplies. So now you can just hop downtown to the vintage home to fulfill all your knitting and crocheting needs.

We are so excited to have this new addition to the store, especially since it is going to help so many of us in the community who have to drive to other towns to get our supplies. Now it is right at our doorstep. Be sure to come and check out all the goodies.

I do believe it has been a long winter for all of us. But hooray, spring is just around the corner! Though there has been a long lapse of posts on the blog, we are eager to get back on board and keep you updated on all the comings and goings of the vintage home. Making Creative Memories this December.

Creativity seems to be overflowing in our shop most of the time. Whether it is in the decorating for the season, in the new pillows, or the latest apron style, we are always getting our fingers into some new idea. Well...now there is a chance for you to get your fingers in on the creativity in the shop.

On Tuesday, December 2nd we will be hosting a Christmas card and tag making class! Sheree Sloop, with Creative Memories, is going to lead a class in making these adorable Christmas cards and tags. The class will start at 6pm and will end around 8pm.

But you have to hurry because space is limited. The registration fee is $20. All of your supplies will be provided. Please call the vintage home at 336.903.4932 to reserve your seat. I hope you will be able to join us!

Holiday Open House

We had our Holiday Open House on Thursday November 13th and it was great fun and a huge success. The night before Molly and I were running around like two little elves until 10:00 pm, and back again the next morning getting the store just the way we wanted it to look. And I could not have done it without Molly, she did a FABULOUS job moving and decorating the whole store, so a big huge THANK YOU to her for all her hard work!!!! I think everyone who came had a great time, and it was suggested that we do it again in another couple of weeks...HOLD ON GUYS!! I am worn out from the last one! But we are going to get together to just eat and enjoy each others company after Thanksgiving...so I will post that date as soon as we know. Here are a few pictures of the store that night....If you didn't get a chance to come in please stop in soon.

I did not get many pictures of everyone that night , but I am glad we have this one of Teena Compeau, she did a great job with bringing in tons of food , handmade aprons, and a beautiful pocketbook that we gave as a door prize...THANK YOU for all that you do for us!!!!!!!And a special thanks to Jayne Cline who also brought a ton of food and "WASSAILL", you are the best !!! And of course a Thank You to Keith Lenderman who made my favorite brownies that I always try to tell people that they are no good, so I can have them all, YUMMY as always.

My Sweet Son

I went to Columbia, South Carolina to watch my "sweet son" play his last soccer game...I think the parents were more into the game than the kids, but all had a good time. When I asked Kyle if he was going to play next year his response was " maybe I will play tennis instead" . I am glad he participated and made new friends, isn't that what it is all about anyway!!!?

It is so much fun to make things out of happy fabric and I really enjoyed making these for her. I can't wait to see them in the room she is doing. Fall Open House

It is that time of year again, and I am so happy for the opportunity to still be here for the Fall and Christmas season, the last few months have been a struggle with the economy and it has been a little touch and go, so a big THANK YOU to all my customers who have continued to support the store and who turned out for the Fall Open House!!!! I closed for two days prior and rearranged the entire store. What a job, it is like opening all over again. Hillsville or Bust!!!

Well my dear friends Jug and Kim Shumate packed up with me and we headed to Hillsville Va, for their annual Flea Market. It was a very interesting four days, and an expierence I won't soon forget. We had a good time and met some great folks too. Here are a few pictures of our booth and the fun that went on.....

Hillsville Flea Market

Well, we are off to Hillsville,Va to their big Labor Day Flea Market. Jug and Kim Shumate are coming with me and a trailer full of merchandise. And of course I hope we come back with a empty trailer, so pray that we sell everything and don't get rained on the whole time. It has been raining here everyday, and is suppose to for the next couple of days. I have never been, but am told that some 500,000 people come out for this every year....If even half show up, that's a huge number of people. I will blog about next week after we get back...
Also the new Romantic Home Magazine for September is in, and it is a good issue, so stop by the store for your copy before they are all gone!!!

I don't know about other people, but I look forward to all my new issues of magazines at the beginning of each month, it is almost as good as Christmas, especially if it is a good issue filled with lots of inspiration . I just got in the most wonderful Silver plate items and Sterling Silver Bracelets by Penny Conti @ Tunkables....My friend Eris Ball , who has a little store in Elkin called "In Every Room" , turned me on to these and we just love them. All the pieces are hand inscribed and each is unique with different sayings. One of my favorites is the Cuff Bracelet with..."the journey is the reward" or the card case that says "if you do what you love you will never work a day in your life". There will be many more new items to come from Tunkables for the holiday, a must present for anyone!!!

Family Summer Vacation

It has been too long since my last blog...so sorry, been on vacation then sick and then back at the store trying to play catch up.... Is there ever enough time in the day, week, or even month to get to all the things we want to. My children and I went to Seattle to visit my mom and family that I have not seen in a REALLY long time,and had such a good time, it was great to see everyone and get reacquainted. Happy Anniversary to "the vintage home"Wow! I can't believe it has been 1 year since we opened the store..... I look at this picture and just get a huge smile on my face, seeing Kim, my best friend and then partner and the store behind us looking so good. What a great time of reflection not only for the store but with the relationships with my dearest friends who have been on this journey and all the great new people who have come into my life through the store. A ton of hard work and sleepless nights ( that hasn't changed) and reinventing the store every few months it has been quite an experience, and I would do it all again!!!! I am very grateful to all involved and pray that we can all still be here in another year.

One of my favorite places in Wilkes County is Talia, a bistro style coffee house nestled in the heart of downtown North Wilkesboro. They serve Coffee, espressos, lattes, dessert and a seasonal menu of sandwiches, quiche ,pasta and much more. It is owned and operated by my dear friends Jim and Kathy Kozak, whom I met when I first moved here , and have been kind, encouraging and always very supportive of me. They have opened there hearts, home, family and know their business to me. They wanted to help my store get more exposure and suggested that I put some of the items on display. I think it looks great and hope it will do well there and create a sense of excitement for people to come and shop with me. Here are some pictures of the merchandise I displayed with them.

Wilkes Antique Mall

My friend Joe Campbell owner of Wilkes Antique Mall, has a GREAT 20,000 Square foot Antique Mall right down the rode from my store. It is actually were I got my start in this town, with a booth and then a job working with him. I then branched out and open my store last year. But anytime I need a certain item or better yet a piece of furniture for display, down the road I go to see Joe. Here are some pictures of his store, which can't even capture how fabulous it is in size and merchandise, for that you will have to visit Wilkesboro.....

June 08 Finds!

We just got in some great new things and I thought we should share them with the world!

The new Welcome signs are in, and I think the black is such a nice update to the interesting vintage scroll-work around the edges. A must-have to make your porch politely greet your friends and family.

We have some new magnets in fleur-de-lis and chickadee shapes. Everything french just says "spring," so the magnets will keep a sunny disposition even when you're sweating through this heatwave.

This mirror is a great new find! Michelle already has a few matching picture frames that we just can't keep on the shelves, and this tin-framed mirror probably isn't far behind them. In cream and dark cherry, we've got a color for your house.

More June Finds!

We just got in some more of these adorable bird prints. In the four colors, you could change them out every season, or just bring some whimsy to your home with all four.

I personally love anything in black and white. It's just so timeless and classy. These frames epitomize those sentiments and would be a great way to display those family photos from yesteryear.

We seem to have frames galore in the vintage home this week. Of course, they're all so wonderful, who could complain? This rose pattern reminds me of those gorgeous old victorian sofas in sitting rooms.

These adorable little frames are distressed and add that beach-feel to any room. There's something about white and blue that is just so clean and fresh.

Finally, our last two frames are my personal favorites. The wooden frame reminds me of so many we had when we were kids, but the crafter has added a tiny border of sage green to keep with the season. It's just a tiny touch that makes the frame perfect. The other frame matches a new mirror we have in the store, both made of pressed tin. It has the look of old designer ceilings that just scream haute-couture.

Laura's Special Pillows

My friend Laura Welborn brought me a dress that belonged to her mother and asked me to make her a few pillows out of this dress (should of taken a picture of the dress),I tried to use as much of the dress as possible, even made ruffles around the two small pillows out of the lining. I know she will always think of her mom when she looks at them....ENJOY!!!

Here at the vintage home, I am forever working on custom work for my customers, one of the many things I try to offer to my customers, I thought I would share a few photo's of some of my original work...please inquire at the store for your very own originals.....

These pillows were for one of my favorite customers, Carol C, she brought me a picture out of a magazine and the ceneter fabric, which was the arm cover for her sofa, and asked me to make them....Well here you go, they actually look just like the picture...we were pleased!!!

Here is my best friend Kim Shumate, actually at my son's birthday. He made everyone wear "the sombrero" and I think it is fitting to see Kim in it. Well it is her 50th birthday, and I am honored to be a part of it and her life. I don't really know were to begin to tell you about what Kim means to me and my life. It warms my heart to know that I have and will always have a friend like Kim in my life. She is definitely one of those people for me that I met and just knew there was something so special about her, and wanted nothing more than to get to know her, be apart of her life and she a part of mine. And here we are, so many memories we have made together and I know there will be so many more, and what a journey it has been. I have learned so much from her and will continue to learn and grow with our friendship. There are so many qualities that stand out about Kim, I couldn't name them all, but here are a few....Loving, kind generous, warm, patient and always encouraging!!! You mean the world to me..I Love You, Happy Birthday Girlfriend.

These colorful towel-sets are some of my favorite things in the store. Hand-sewn and perfectly paired, these 4-packs come in their own little pouch. So many mothers would love these for their holiday gift. ...at least it's something they'll use!
Annie's niece has a new bad habit of spitting out food...everywhere. Thankfully, these adorable new bibs catch all that and keep the floors stain-free! It's a must-have for any new mom.

Oh, the Ugly-dolls. They're so strange, but kids love them. I guess strange-chic is a new trend. If you're looking for something different, we obviously have it. For the more traditional, our cute stuffed animals are new variations on old favorites and are sure to please!

We have great new books including party planners, recipe books, and even special remembrance books for Mother's Day!
I just love these long matches. We have them in a number of styles, but the Birthday ones are so festive. They'll last you through years of celebrations...in style!
These K. Hall soaps smell delicious. In scents like flax-linen, milk and pomegranite, everyone that comes in the store first says, "Wow, what smells so good?"

Vintage Aprons

We are now featuring Aprons made from vintage tablecloths, just in time for Mothers Day.
My friend Jayne Cline and I went to Metrolina Expo, a big antique show,( which was the best time even though it was cold and raining, it didn't stop us from spending lots of money and the entire day there), and we came across aprons made out of tablecloths and of course I said " I can make that" and came back to the store and did. I can't take credit for the idea, but I did put the vintage home twist on it with vintage buttons, and different fabric on the back. I have been in a very SLOW creative mode lately, lots of ideas but no motivation to get them done in any hurry, which means Mothers Day will be here before you know it. I am always running out of time, I better get busy...............

Here at The Vintage Home, working on custom drapes, pillows, curtains is something we are happy to offer our customers. One of my favorite customers turned friend, Sarah Handy, and I have been working on pillows for her bedroom which are pictured above. We think they turned out great! We used the same gold, flowered fabric that is on these pillows to make curtains for her bedroom.

This service we offer our customers produces unique and one of a kind item--never two alike! We also do invitation and/or photo pillows frequently--they've been very well received. Each one is made to order, especially for the individual who will be receiving it. Come in and allow us to design one for you or for anyone you might be looking for that unique gift.

Welcome to the vintage home, an exciting store with ambiance, style,delightfully old and whimsically new...a great mix which offers something for everyone. The store opened June 2007, and has been growing ever since, always changing going on, new products and handmade unique items that only we carry. I feel very fortunate to be doing exactly what I love and am passionate about. And it must be said that this has been a group effort , without all my supporters and all the continued encouragement none of this could have ever transpired. My friend and once partner Kim Shumate has never ending energy and always finds time to step up to the plate bringing her husband Jug along for the ride. Without them my store would still be a dream...I am forever grateful to the both of them...especially since they won't let me go anywhere..looks like Wilkes County might be home for awhile. And I have met so many great people, customers and customers turned friends, that makes it such a joy to have such a great store...so if you haven't yet made your way in...stop by and experience it for yourself. There is always something going on.....

Mother's Day Card Class

We've had great response and interest in the card making classes. Kim Shumate teaches beginners and advanced alike to make beautiful cards. You'll say, "Gee, I made that!!" when you're finished! See photos above for class offered Thursday, April 17th and May 1st 6:00-8:00. But----Michelle says the May 1st class is already full!!

If enough interest, we're thinking we'll do one Saturday, April 19th too! Please call the store and speak to Michelle, Annie or Pam 336-903-4932 to reserve your spot. It's only $10 and that includes everything you need for your creation. Please give us at least 48 hours notice if you can't make it so we can fill your spot with someone else. We do usually have a waiting list. Michelle says hey to everyone and promises to post something soon....she's a bit " 'puter shy"!!
